It is the comprehensive healthcare reform bill signed into law in March 2010, also known as Obamacare. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a health care system law that covers addiction treatment and is becoming an increasingly popular method of paying for drug and alcohol rehab. If you are addicted to alcohol or drugs, the ACA may be able to help you pay for treatment.

The ACA also increases the amount of money and treatment options accessible to Medicare and Medicaid recipients in the United States. Medicare and Medicaid coverage have different pricing and restrictions than Marketplace medical insurance policies. The ACA sponsors insurance policies for sale on an internet marketplace known as the Health Insurance Marketplace. These medical insurance policies, like private insurance plans, include addiction treatment.

The primary goals of the law are as follows:

  • Make affordable health insurance available to a larger number of individuals. The law provides subsidies (premium tax credits) to consumers with incomes ranging from 100 percent to 400 percent of the federal poverty level (FPL).
  • Expand the Medicaid program to cover all people with incomes less than 138 percent of the federal poverty line. (Not all states’ Medicaid programs have been expanded.)
  • Support new medical care delivery approaches that aim to reduce overall healthcare costs.

Who is eligible for the ACA?

Everyone is eligible for “Obamacare,” as this was one of the ACA’s top objectives: to make health insurance available to everyone. Many people who have insurance through a private provider, whether self-purchased or through their employers, can maintain it if they so want. Those who are not currently insured, on the other hand, have two options:

  1. Use the Health Insurance Marketplace to obtain the minimum necessary coverage.
  2. pay a “shared-responsibility charge” on their federal taxes for each month they do not have health insurance. Exemptions from this fee are possible but must be requested.

What Does Affordable Healthcare Cover?

The ACA requires that coverage for addiction treatment be as comprehensive as it is for any other medical service. These insurance policies can provide you with the following benefits:

  • Addiction evaluation
  • Addiction treatment medication
  • Alcohol and drug testing
  • Brief intervention
  • Clinic visits
  • Home health visits
  • Anti-craving medication
  • Family counseling

Inpatient therapies such as medical detox programs are also covered by ACA health insurance policies. Some states operate their own Health Insurance Marketplaces in addition to Healthcare.gov. The differences between state and federal medical insurance are determined by each state’s Medicare and Medicaid coverage.

How does paying for rehab work with the ACA?

For plans designed under the Affordable Care Act, there are four “metal” classifications. Bronze plans have the lowest monthly costs but cover less than the others. The greater the cost, like with any insurance plan, the better the coverage.

  • A Bronze Obamacare plan may be the best option for someone who was quite healthy before to addiction and wants to attend a lower-cost recovery center.
  • An Obamacare Silver Plan is an excellent option for low-income people looking to attend a rehabilitation center and who may require coverage for medical treatments other than addiction treatment now or in the future.
  • A Gold or Platinum Obamacare plan would be a suitable option for individuals who can afford higher premiums and need medical services and treatments on a regular basis.

How Does this Act Broaden Treatment?

The ACA lowers the cost of addiction treatment, expands treatment alternatives, and transfers many benefits from employer-provided health plans to individual medical insurance policies. The ACA also permits young individuals under the age of 26 to stay on their parents’ health insurance plan.

Among the new benefits include addiction treatment regardless of “pre-existing health conditions.” Every year, ACA financing is used to establish hundreds of new inpatient and outpatient health centers to provide this increasing care. Many of these new facilities will also provide treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders such as depression.

Finding A Rehab Center

Addiction rehabilitation may be a lengthy and arduous journey. Choosing the appropriate treatment program is critical to achieving – and maintaining – sobriety. Not all programs provide the same treatment options or accept the same insurance plans. Our treatment providers can advise you on which treatment facilities accept your insurance.
